What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes fat from various parts of the body including, but not limited to: thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, waist, and chest. Since it is a cosmetic procedure, it will not be covered by your insurance.

Why do people get liposuction?

People get liposuction strictly for cosmetic reasons. Many people come into the office and state that no matter how hard they try, they have one problem area where they just can’t get the fat off.

Am I a candidate for liposuction?

Once you have decided that you would like to have liposuction, you should first investigate whether or not you are a candidate for surgery. Although one should come in for a consultation to determine whether or not surgery is an option, here are a few of the reasons patients are typically turned away from our office:

What are the risks associated with liposuction?

Risks are relatively low for liposuction; however, with any surgical procedure, there are risks. Here are a few of the more common risks:

What type of liposuction do we offer?

Dr. McClellan offers tumescent liposuction. In this form, a tumescent solution, a combination of a local anesthetic and vasoconstrictor, are injected into the fat that is to be removed. This fluid volume creates a space between the fatty tissue and muscle, allowing maximum space for the cannula. The cannula is a hollow tube that is connected to an aspirator that literally sucks the fat out of your body. This type of liposuction produces optimal results and small inconspicuous incisions.

What can I expect from the procedure and recovery?

Liposuction is performed at Monongalia General Hospital. The time it takes to complete as well as the type of anesthesia needed is dependent upon the location, how much fat is to be removed, and if another procedure is being performed simultaneously. Dr. McClellan will see you for your post-operative appointment the day after surgery. At this time, you will be given a compression garment that is to be worn at all times. This garment will allow your body to heal properly and give you the best results. Although you will be able to see an immediate result from liposuction, it may take several months for all of the swelling to subside and the final result to become apparent. The amount of time necessary to heal will depend upon the location and amount of liposuction performed.

What should I expect at my initial consultation?

For a liposuction consultation, you should allow at least 30 minutes in our office. Plan to come to the office about 15 minutes early, to your appointment, to fill out the necessary forms. During your consultation Dr. McClellan will give you more information about the procedure and answer any of your questions. It is often helpful to have a list of questions that you may have or something that you need clarification on.

After you meet with Dr. McClellan, you will then be escorted to Becky Miller’s office. She is our patient coordinator and will provide you with the price quote for the surgery as well as give you information about what financial options are available. As the patient coordinator, Becky makes every effort to ensure that you are ready and feel comfortable before surgery. This may include repeat visits to the office or answering any questions that you may have after your initial appointment.
